Snail Day

Wet wet wet
Grey skies mirrored in shallow puddles
Flattened grass, moist earth
Dripping tree branches

The snails reign
Leaving slimy trails along the sidewalk
Curly shells perfectly designed
Each pattern unique
Beady eyes searching and twitching

Slow, steady, soggy adventurers

Ill tidings

Watching sunlight turn to grey
Darkness drawing in
Wind is bearing tidings ill
Sound of rain tapping on tin

Drips persist and overwhelm
Force me away to hide
Helpless against a growing storm
Whose will won't be denied

Drip Drip Drop

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune as you fall all around
Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare with your beautiful sound?
Beautiful sound, beautiful sound
Drip, drop, drip, drop
(Little April Showers - Bambi)

Okay so it's not exactly April anymore and in all honesty, it hasn't even been raining out here. BUT we did have a delightfully non-spring-like dump of snow on May 1st! Oh the joys of being in Jackson Hole.

However, with said dump of 6 inches, came a whole day of symphonious dripping as the fluffy snow melted away, dropping in heavy clumps from tree branches and leaking over the eaves of buildings. Drips and drops were heard all over campus as the snow turned to slush and the ground turned to mush. By late afternoon the sun was shining happily down on the muddy lawn and the snow was scarce.

The sparkling drops of weeping snowmelt continued into the evening. The sound was close enough to resembling a light April shower that I was willing to pretend and sing-a-long to the Bambi song as I went about the day. Now all we're missing are those supposed "May flowers".

I had almost forgotten how Wyoming seems to misunderstand the word "spring" as an actual change of seasons...

Farewell

For being the shortest month of the twelve, February seems to have dragged on rather long this year. I wasn't ready for it when it got here but then it seemed to be quite happy to stay awhile. Funny how time can just fly by slowly....

It was also one of the busiest for our family. It seemed we were always headed somewhere for some festivity or another: weddings, parties, baby showers... I'm hoping a new month will give us some time to breathe.

It was a month of bright sunshine and drenching rain. As usual, the people of the Fraser Valley seemed to be trying to rush spring one day: planting flowers and taking walks without jackets, but the next day they are hitting up the slopes, enjoying the fluffy snow of a glorious powder day. I just have to smile. We live in a truly special place here on the coast.

Today seems like the perfect day to bid February farewell. Wet, windy and wild, I'm looking forward to March and the closer it brings us to the freshness of spring once again.

Some of my favourite pictures of the month came from my dear cousin's wedding (no surprise there!). I was blessed to have both my sisters with me again and to enjoy the time up north with family.

Still hard to believe my beautiful little cousin is married!

Typical Swaan-Styles girls pic

Loved watching the precious moments between my aunt and Courtney as they both move on to a new stage of life.

These two are my favourite. Best friends for life.

Me and my gorgeous, talented sister who slaved over everyone's hair all morning!

Always Daddy's little girls

In the air

I have missed being here during the fall season. Truly. The colours, crunchy leaves, and rain - you just don't get those in Wyoming where I have been for the past two autumns. I finally got some time today to go out and enjoy one of these rare sunny November days we've been having.

It was just cold enough to drive my hands into my pockets and the wind made me shiver once or twice as I walked through the park in my sweater. I'm looking forward to toque, scarf, and mitten weather. And I think it's coming soon my friends! The snappy cold air lingered all day even as the sun tried to generate some warmth. There is nothing quite like that smell of winter eh?

And winter IS coming. The world outside is getting duller by the day as the leaves lose their bright lustrous colours. I was glad to catch those that are still lingering.

Red is in this year and I'm loving it.

Change is in the air.

Ready. Set.

Go.

Wet

dark clouds hover
close
overhead
vibrant grass, green with
life
sweet in the wind

running in the
rain
breathing in
and out
the wet, fresh
air

each step a squelching
splash
ducking under branches
heavy with crystal droplets
dripping

Thursday Smiles (No. 4)

I love this time of year. The fresh crisp air, the wet green grass, the taste of summer on the wind. I love the daffodils that sprout up in the highway medians, how their bright bobbing heads seem to dance to a rhythm only they can hear while the rest of us race on by consumed by our busy lives. I love waking up to a foggy morning, moisture beading every surface, every sound muffled and ever so slowly the sun peels away the mist to reveal a sparkling blue sky.

There's nothing like those first spring sunsets, the enchanting colours of the clouds and the immediate chill that chases the sun over the horizon.

You can't beat the smell of spring flowers, first to brighten the gardens and paths of an awakening world coming to life. They seem to pop up everywhere and bloom overnight, soaking up both the intermittent days of sunshine as well as the life-giving spring showers.

The rain, oh the rain. Nothing like spring in the Fraser Valley. It's definitely not the time of year to be planning picnics but how I adore those spur of the moment walks in the sun, stealing the snatches of warm weather we are given, dreaming of summer. And how high our hopes soar as we dream of heat and vacations and days without rain.

Oh spring. You make me smile.

That wrap-up-in-a-blanket sound

Rain pattering on the tin roof
echoing in the empty room;
       a lonely sound,
       a cozy sound,
       a wrap-up-in-a-blanket-reading sound.

Coffeetime shared only with fictional characters as
the waving trees outside beckon my attention
through the window, cold, wet.

The constant dripping of the eaves goes
unheard; masked by sweet music – my only companion
on this lonely day.

Wind picks up and, like the ocean tide,
rain thunders in waves and
the house creaks and sighs heavily.

Grey skies darken the dreary outdoor world
while fuzzy slippers warm my toes and
I dream of dancing orange flames in a crackling fire.

Sometimes I need a day like today when
the torrents force me into hiding and I can rest listening to
       the lonely sound,
       the cozy sound,
       the wrap-up-in-a-blanket sound.

And THIS is spring

I'm sorry Jackson Hole, you're beautiful but THIS is what I have been missing! SPRING: Blue skies! Warm sun! Green grass! FLOWERS!!! Birds!! I love my Fraser Hole!!!

Our lovely apple blosoms
Rhodos budding

Apple blossoms and blue sky!!!
New leaves on the holly tree

A personal favorite: lilacs

Last of the tulips in the front yard

Yep, even the dandelions were a welcome sight!
I was dragged from my bed this morning and literally went from covers one minute to clothes and in the car 10 minutes later...had to join my sis and Mom for a walk of course! It was rather enjoyable to be out in the sunny morning air with all the birds chirping and the cheery people out and about. I just can't get over how green everything is. I don't even mind that it rained ALL DAY yesterday because it makes everything so fresh and beautiful the next day. As hard as it is being away from my Jackson home, I do so love it here as well.
